Lawn topdressing applies a thin, even layer of suitable material across the turf. The goal may be to add organic matter, improve the surface soil, support recovery after aeration or smooth minor low areas.

Reasons to Topdress a Lawn

Topdressing and Core Aeration
These services are often paired because aeration creates openings and topdressing places material at the surface where some of it can work into those openings. The combination can be useful when compaction and soil quality both limit the lawn.
The lawn must be actively growing and able to recover. Timing, watering and mowing should be adjusted around the service so the grass is not smothered or stressed.
Topdressing Is Not Major Grading
A thin topdressing layer can smooth small irregularities, but it cannot correct deep holes, severe settling, drainage channels or major grade problems. Those conditions may require soil work beyond a routine lawn service.
Topdressing also does not replace the need to correct irrigation, mowing or pest problems. It works best as part of a broader lawn treatment and soil-care plan.
What to Expect After Topdressing
The lawn may look dusty or lightly covered at first, but the grass should remain visible through the material. Watering and normal growth help the material settle into the canopy and soil surface.
When Topdressing May Not Be Appropriate
