Core aeration is the practice in which soil plugs are pulled from the lawn surface (typically 3” plugs). This has many benefits. For starters, this loosens the soil, which reduces soil compaction. With the soil being less compact, nutrients and water are easily received by the soil, thus benefiting the turf. Also, during aeration, stolons and rhizomes are cut. This encourages the turf to produce new runners and roots, which improves turf density. Late spring and summer are the best times for core aeration for us here in the Midlands.
